Undergraduate in Graphic design at Art Center College Of Design

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Graphic design has vastly expanded beyond its traditional domain of posters, printed publications and packaging to encompass the entire field of communication design: the transformation of text and images into compelling messaging through the most effective media available. Graphic designers must now be comfortable with a wide range of media, from motion graphics and interactive communication to spatial applications such as environmental graphics, way-finding systems, 3D commercial graphics and branded environments.

Art Center’s Graphic Design program begins with four terms of accelerated, formal education in fundamental aesthetics and craftsmanship, after which students may specialize in a single area of Graphic Design or continue exploring the full scope of communication design. The second four terms include advanced Transdisciplinary Studios combining Graphic Design students with Product Design, Environmental Design, Advertising, Illustration, Film and Photography students as well as opportunities to participate in Sponsored Projects with major brands and organizations. Throughout, students’ technical instruction is supplemented with an array of courses on design history, the language of the moving image and the art of research.

In undertaking projects as diverse as bookmaking, using traditional letterpress technology in our Archetype Press facility, or designing a digital magazine for a mobile phone, the Graphic Design Department encourages students to explore a variety of media. Traditional manual skills, such as calligraphy and drawing, and the growing array of sophisticated graphics software are parts of the same broad spectrum of tools available to graphic designers. We also believe in the power of communication design to create positive social change. This has prompted us to engage in a number of collaborations with major organizations dealing with humanitarian causes and issues of sustainability.

By learning to create innovative solutions that are coherent, beautiful, engaging and provocative, students will become creative leaders in the dynamic field of communication design—whether they join a Fortune 500 company or launch a design studio of their own.
