The course aims to provide an intellectual, creative environment and encouraged critical debate to help focus and contextualise work, discovering and developing individual potential. Strong emphasis is placed on visual research, drawing for design and concept development.
Students benefit from well-equipped workshops where they are encouraged to be innovative with the use of materials in order to push the boundaries of surface design and printed textiles.
Special course features
The course philosophy is that of a cross disciplinary creative approach to a broad range of surface design processes. A fusion of inter-disciplinary experimentation through material investigation is actively encouraged for applied/craft/or conceptual outcomes.
Course content
Subjects covered on this course include pattern design, screenprinting and digital printing for interior of fashion outcomes, creative design for exhibition purposes and public commissions, design research, professional practice, visual research, colour/trend forecasting and CAD.
Stage one
Stage one introduces visual research methodology for surface design and printed textiles and an introduction to studio and workshop practice, supported by the theoretical studies programme.
Stage two
Stage two places emphasis on students’ creative potential and individuality. Projects are generally studio and workshop-based, some led by external contacts and sponsors.
Stage three
Stage three encompasses the final major project, which is the design and production of a collection supported by academic research. Students will be responsible for writing their own project, which should promote their personal aims and ambitions.
