The graphic design program at Defiance College is intended to prepare students to express ideas visually in service to their employers and the wider good of society.
Graphic Design majors focus on using graphics and text to communicate ideas and emotions. Everything we do begins with the need to communicate. After we determine what our client is trying to say and the emotions they want to convey to the audience, we brainstorm graphics that may serve our purpose. Once we have some sketches that might work, we draw from a wide range of digital tools to make those sketches into finished products. Need a resizable graphic like a logo? Look at a vector program. Need motion graphics? Draw on video or animation. Sensitivity to the client’s needs, creativity in the design process, and proficiency in a variety of digital tools come together to make great graphic design.
Graphic Design is a major for those who:
Experience the world through sight
Watch TV for the ads instead of the programs
Doodle what others say instead of hearing what they say
Experience frustration at having to read books and write papers
See the ideas of the world as shapes and colors in space
Enjoy freelance activities and are self-motivated

Furniture designers produce designs for items of furniture and other related products. Designs may be for mass production, in small batches, or as one-offs, and designers may just be involved in this aspect of the work, or may be designer/makers, producing items from their own designs.
Designers may first carry out research and look at other products to help them develop their own ideas. They will need to consider how the item will look and how practical or functional it will be, taking into consideration areas such as the cost and availability of materials, the manufacturing process, the needs of the client or intended end-user, and safety implications. They may work to a brief agreed with a client or, in the case of manufacturing companies, may originate new designs or improve existing ones.
Designers prepare sketches and models of their initial ideas, by hand or with the aid of computer software, often in liaison with other professionals such as production managers, marketing staff and engineers.
The program aims to provide students with the intellectual and practical skills necessary for the design and making of items of furniture using a range of materials. It acknowledges both contemporary manufacturing methods and those of the designer-maker. The program provides equally for the student who wishes to start up his/her own company or wishes to seek employment within the furniture industry. Construction and the materials used in furniture are given equal emphasis along with the more obvious skills of the designer. The program is an intense practical experience and, at its conclusion, each student should have a number of items of furniture that they have designed and made themselves.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Furniture Design degree requires full time attendance for three years including a two months practical experience. A total of 103 credits is required. Computer Aided Design, Islamic Design, Studio Arts and Photography are specialty options that can be undertaken as minors within the program (Refer to section 9 on Minors).

This course presents a creative investigation of the design of spaces, furniture, and other items that reflect the mood of the times. In this way it connects with and develops approaches to architecture, urban spaces, and other major spaces formed in previous eras. During classes, design methods take shape through sketches and rough models as well as in presentations utilizing scale models and CAD.

The term “drawing” underwent a fundamental transformation in the last century. Art movements like Surrealism and Dada initiated intense experimentation with unaccustomed drawing media and backgrounds. Drawing’s often subordinate role, for example as studies or sketches for painting, was thereby questioned and the possibility of this medium’s equal status with the established forms of artistic expression (like painting) was suggested.
This development also continued later, for example in Concept and Minimal Art. The simultaneous appearance of the New Media from the early 1960s to the present made the realization of drawing visible in these new media contexts, including as the documentation of diverse draftsmanlike expressions. A wide range of drawing materials was thereby used. More and more frequently, real space (including landscape as space) and virtual space replaces the sheet of paper.

Master’s Curriculum
We work from a core concept of “integrated design” based on project-organised problem-based learning (PBL). This implies a combination of creative and analytical skills, aesthetic confidence and technical competence. This programme aims to empower students to transform function, aesthetics, production techniques and environmental protection into expressive architectural form, challenging designs, expressive urban environments or astonishing virtual worlds.
Design must be sustainable, aesthetic and functional, but it must also be able to narrate and interpret. Students learn to control the latest information tools, using these technologies throughout the entire process, from the preliminary sketches to project design and management. Each of the programmes comprises 120 ECTS including courses, project work and workshops. The 1st semester offers a course in problem-based learning (PBL) and project work. During the first three semesters, you will participate in a large semester project, an individual design project, workshops, and possibly a study tour on the 2nd semester. Courses related to the projects comprise 1/3 of the time. The 4th semester is reserved for writing the thesis.
