Introductory Diploma in Art Design and Media at Kingston College

This one year course will help you understand the world of art, design and media. You will be encouraged to develop the kinds of practical and personal skills needed to help you learn and reach your full potential.
Entry Requirements

An entry certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills or other entry level qualifications, an appropriate standard of literacy and numeracy, related interests and experiences. A successful interview and satisfactory reference are required.

International Entry Requirements:

English Language Level IELTS5.0 or an equivalent English Language Certificate. High School Leaving Certificate D-G grades or other related comparible qualifications. Portfolio of work, satisfactory reference.
Course Duration

1 year, full time
Content

The programme is unit based and assessments are made throughout the course. Core units introduce 2D and 3D visual communication and vocational contexts. Students will be given the opportunity to study two specialist units. These may cover Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion, Textiles, 3D Design, Multimedia, animation and video production. It may not be possible to offer all these options but choices will be made in line with student needs in any given year.

Numeracy and literacy skills will be also be delivered as part of this programme.

On successful completion you will gain a BTEC Introductory Diploma in Art, Design and Media graded pass, merit or distinction (Level 1) in addition to separate numeracy and literacy qualifications.
Progression

The BTEC Introductory Diploma qualification provides an ideal route for students looking to move on to further courses in Art, Design and Media at Level 2.
Additional Information

While some materials and equipment are provided, you will be expected to pay for most of your own equipment and materials, much of which is available from the College Shop. Trips and visits complement your studio work and these will incur some travel expenses.

National Diploma in Graphic Design Course at Kingston College

Course Duration

2 years, full time
Content

This is a general course designed to introduce you to the main areas of Graphic Design. It puts important emphasis on drawing for research and includes the study of lettering, illustration, photography, packaging, editorial, computer aided digital design and animation. You will be prepared for the world of work through simulated and live projects as well as visits to and from practising designers.

The course is unit based and assessments are made throughout the course. Additional learning and pastoral support is provided through the tutorial system.
Progression

The course prepares you for a range of higher education possibilities. In the past many students have progressed on to reputable Degree and Foundation Degree courses in Graphic Design and related areas. You will be advised and supported in your applications with help on appropriate routes and portfolio preparation. You could expect to be employed at junior level in advertising agencies, design groups, publishers, computer graphics specialists or type design companies.
