Professional Opportunities
Many of the students continue their study at graduate schools either inside or outside of Korea. Students who complete the requirements for a teacher’s certificate will be eligible to take the teacher’s exam. Many graduates have landed in positions to which their major is relevant. Some have worked independently in their own studios and presented their works at shows such as the Eun Craft Art Show, hosted by alumni of Seoul Women’s University’s arts and crafts department. The most common careers the graduates have launched are those of ceramics/textile designer, middle school/high school teacher, various positions at craft producers, and planning and public relations officer in the corporate sector.
Advice when considering this major
The latest trend of Ceramics/Fiber Arts is to accentuate the characteristics of the materials that the objectives are made of. In practice, this has always been the priority of the craft arts. Ceramics/Fiber Arts have extended from the production of traditional tools to the creation of fine arts, which may help redefine the meaning of Ceramics/Fiber Arts. Today, we are living in an environment inundated with nameless designs and products manufactured by machine. The endless supply of mass produced goods are undermining our creative instincts. Ceramics/Fiber Arts will not only prevent the deterioration of our creativity, but also rekindle our creative inclination. With the help of Ceramics/Fiber Arts, you will be able to see the world in a new light and make people’s lives more fulfilling. Craft arts will be an integral part of the world to come. Painting provides a structured curriculum to help students develop an extensive understanding of painting and the skills required for it. The objective of Painting is to train creative individuals who will utilize their talents in fine arts for the good of society. The study of western arts will acquaint students with various methods and media through lectures and small-class seminars/practices. After laying a solid foundation of the basics, students will set out to find and express their own voice in their works. Students will have an opportunity to present their assignments to the public at an annual exhibition held at the on-campus museum. In the qualifying year, the department sponsors exhibitions of the works of prospective graduates open to the public and prepares them to work as full-blown artists. The practice courses range from flat molding, basic painting techniques, painting, techniques in using raw materials, print, basic canvas techniques, oriental painting, drawing, techniques and molding and modern paintings. The department offers courses of fine arts theory such as introduction of art museums, history of western fine art, history of oriental fine art, theory of modern paintings, molding and seminars on modern paintings. During the course Seminars on Modern Paintings professionals are invited once a week to give lectures on fine arts or other subjects that have a bearing on fine arts. Students go on trips every year to locations with pristine nature. Other than the seminars and annual trips, there are a lot of more student group activities going on throughout the year.

Professional Opportunities
As Painting falls into the category of fine, graduates tend to start independent careers as artists. In other words, many of our students become full-time artists. Some of the graduates supplement their income by working for art museums, art publishers, and art centers as curators, or companies as designers, or they run art schools.
Advice when considering this major
Most of all, you need to have a positive outlook on fine arts. You may agree that excellent art comes from creative thinking and an innocent view on life. You need to have your own perspective while observing and expressing subjects, instead of being closed-minded and blindly following conventional techniques.

All the training in Industrial Design can have a bearing on all the design of and work with 3D space. Most of our students have gone on to work for design companies, or design departments of companies. Some have moved up the corporate ladder, while others start up their own business. Students of Industrial Design may choose from a wide range of opportunities in the design field.
Advice when considering this major
Designers are a part of the silent majority that keeps a low profile. Designers are part of history and live with changes in history, instead of taking upon themselves to make changes. There is no need to either underestimate or overestimate the role of designers. However, designing capacity comes only after designers complete a lengthy and arduous training. In reality, designers may have to be content with meager wages that are not commensurate with the amount of work they put in. Therefore, you need to have conviction of the value of what you are doing and enjoy the process of learning, although training can be quite demanding.

Industrial Design is involved in the production of all the multi-dimensional things that people make. In other words, industrial design determines the shape and functionality of electronic appliances, electric equipment, tools, vehicles, lights, furniture, environmental products, school supplies and products copying from animation characters and other 3-dimensional objects. Students will learn how to make these products small, beautiful and suitable for commercial use. Industrial Design requires a designer’s instinct, an understanding of and extensive knowledge of technology and a healthy appreciation of business as it is about designing the merchandise that will be sold to consumers. Although most of the design process is computer-assisted, it is very important to make a real 3-D model of their design and put it through tests to determine the feasibility of their design, because the industrial design deals with 3-D space. Industrial Design addresses basically all the aspects of people’s lives. To help adjust to the 3D space of industrial design, the curriculum focuses extra attention on computer-assisted design.

The objective of Visual Design is to educate professional visual designers who fully understand the importance of visual language, and create a new realm of visual arts, based on their unique individuality and cultural experience. To fulfill this objective, the major provides lecture courses describing the relationship between design, society, culture and industry. The structured and thorough practice courses bring out the creativity of students and teach skills to manage the designing process. Typographic and printed design have been the two main focuses of the curriculum, however, the major is currently adding web, interactive and video design to prepare students for the age of new media.
