Changes in the nature of society, including increasing use of advanced information technology, environmental preservation, and graying of the population have made the designer’s roles and responsibilities in society extremely important. With design having such a deeply significant impact on solving society’s problems, for example with the cooperative research conducted between design and industry, people need educational and research institutions to exert even greater independence and originality. NUA’s Design department develops designers and planners capable of being active in a wide range of fields, including industrial, commercial, and environmental design,We help students refine their creative sensibilities while preparing them with a wealth of specialized knowledge, planning abilities, and judgement Hence, with the aim of cultivating the “power to perceive form,” we invite students to participate in creating the concepts defining what design should be in the 21st century.

Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture
The Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture is the first of its kind in the polytechnic educational system of this country. The program integrates the rationalism of planning analysis and the subjective sensibilities of landscaping design into a holistic training program. It provides students with both the technical abilities and fine arts background and leads to a degree as well as expertise in the profession. The four-year curriculum combines planning, design, landscaping, and information into a framework with three major fields: urban planning, landscape architecture, and land development real estate management.

Painting
The graduate Painting Course pursues the skills and sensibilities learned in the four undergraduate years on a deeper, more professional level. Students improve the quality of their painting in an environment in which they work freely, receive the advice of faculty members, and observe others’ work. With the help of a teacher, students think in more detailed, specialized ways about the problems they encounter in their work. Painting styles range from representational to abstract.
The Graduate School focuses entirely on the art work and the individual. It is a world in which conversation and criticism revolve around the students’ work, and in that sense, an important stepping-stone on the road to becoming an artist. Students progress step by step along that path, working on painting and contemplating the role of art in the world.

Living inspiration: dialogue with nature
Japanese Painting essentially portrays the artist’s own spirit, through sincere observation and dialog with nature. Therefore this course emphasizes self-reflection, and thinking about one’s own life, as a vital part of learning.
Our thorough curriculum covers a variety of techniques, enabling students to develop deeper expression through the basic spirit of Japanese painting. Students learn to express their own sensibilities with unique yet universal methods of this style, a part of the aesthetic tradition that has been developing in Kyoto for over 1,000 years.
