The course suits both recent graduates seeking to develop their skills and expand their market awareness, and experienced designers wishing to challenge their careers. Primarily aimed at textile designers, it also attracts applicants from related design disciplines.

Students with a background in design, fine art, architecture, interactive design or product design are welcome to apply, provided they can demonstrate that their aspirations are compatible with the course rationale and the textile discipline.

The course is demanding and challenging and will benefit most those who are prepared to question their contribution to the design discipline and who aim at becoming leading designers/consultants. Once on the course students will be expected to demonstrate creative design skills, develop strategic design thinking, be independent, flexible, and prepared to respond to challenge with a mature and professional attitude.

Your portfolio should show the nature and breadth of the your skills and include mature design work which reflects a strong personal identity. The journey from concept to finished work should be demonstrated through sketchbooks, research, and experiments. Your portfolio should demonstrate:

an understanding and affinity to various materials
a strong sense of colour
creative presentation skills
self initiated work.

Suitable candidates
The course is primarily intended for those with a first degree in product design, three-dimensional design or furniture design. However, we have an increasing number of successful applicants from related disciplines such as ceramic design, interface design, architecture, fine art, jewellery design, engineering and ergonomics. You must also demonstrate that you are sufficiently versed in design practice or a related field, and that your personal and professional aspirations are compatible with the aims of the course.

The MA Industrial Design course has students from a mixture of cultures and backgrounds, and has roughly equal numbers of male and female students.

The course is aimed at those looking to develop their career potential; those with experience of decision making in ceramics, furniture or jewellery design; and practitioners seeking to maximise their existing knowledge-base. Some applicants have a BA in an appropriate specialist subject. Other applicants come from wider arts-based specialisms.

Entry requirements
Honours degree; evidence of experiential learning equivalent to a degree; or 3 years relevant professional experience. For advanced entry at MA level you must be have a relevant Postgraduate Diploma.
Suitable candidates

Graphic Design
Those wishing to discuss and explore the disciplines of graphic design, particularly typography. Applicants are expected to possess strong graphic skills and be proficient in appropriate software such as Quark Xpress or InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, or font creation programmes such as Fontographer.

Illustration
Those considering a career within illustration who have relevant experience in other disciplines or already have professional experience. Applicants must demonstrate strong drawing or image-making skills. Knowledge of creative software applications is very useful (such as Flash for animation purposes), but such software is not taught as part of the Illustration curriculum.

Digital Media
Students from diverse disciplines, interested in extending the language of digital communication. Applicants must be competent in relevant interactive software such as Flash, Director or Dreamweaver, and digital imaging/motion graphics software such as Photoshop and After Effects. Students may decide to use digital film and animation within their projects, but these specific disciplines are not taught as part of the curriculum.

Photography
Students familiar with wet or digital photographic processes from a range of disciplines, who are committed to challenging their visual vocabulary in relation to commercial practice. Applicants should demonstrate strong photographic and image-making skills. Knowledge of digital imaging software is highly desirable.

Portfolio advice
When applying to the course you must submit documentation of your work preferably in the form of up to 20 slides, or alternatively a CD Rom or DVD. Brief versions or long clips of time-based pieces are helpful; there is not enough time to examine large amounts of documentation. Extra documentation or examples of work may be brought to interview.
