This broad-based degree introduces its students to the role of the professional designer as visual communicator and problem-solver. In encouraging the development of concept, research, experimentation, analysis and a critical awareness, the programme provides a fully rounded experience in graphic design whilst allowing specialisation in areas such as illustration, print-based graphics and digital graphics.
The first year of study provides an underpinning of knowledge prior to the more flexible approach in Years 2 and 3, where depth and breadth of specialism is, to a large extent, controlled by the student. The direction each student may take is always supported by the programme’s main aim to provide the profession with the most appropriate new generation of design talent.
An underpinning of theoretical, historical, cultural and professional contexts is given throughout the programme via lectures, visits, both in the UK and Europe, visiting lecturers, live projects, entry to national competitions and a staffing balance of both full-time educators and associate lecturers with significant industry experience.

Are you a professional designer and want to refine your design skills and update your knowledge of current design theories and research techniques? Undertake a design project based on an aspect of your design practice to date, and collaborate with other design professionals to move your work to a higher level.
The Master of Design is a multi-disciplinary programme that gives you the opportunity to sharpen your skills in collaboration with other design professionals. While it is open to bachelors degree graduates, the programme has been specifically developed to allow practising design professionals to upskill while studying part-time.
The degree is ‘by project’, which means that you undertake a project based on an aspect of your design practice to date. There is no coursework, although your design project will be supported by a strong contemporary theoretical framework.
Each year, you take part in several design workshops, at which you present your work in progress for critique and evaluation by invited international designers, architects and landscape architects. Guests are chosen for their innovative approach to design and come from a diverse range of countries and professional backgrounds. Recent guests have been experts in sustainable product design, museum design and curation, and graphic design.
The Master of Design, together with the Master of Architecture and the Master of Landscape Architecture, is part of a suite of design programmes at Unitec. Students of all three programmes combine for theory seminars and workshops in order to foster cross-disciplinary fertilisation, new ideas and new approaches to interdisciplinary practice.

Product Design is a creative and innovative subject, combining new and exciting ideas with technologies for every day life.
Product designers are international in their approach and learn to design specific product applications to respond to our changing everyday world. The product design process and practice engages with the development of prototypes and working examples, which travel through various aspects of research and development, from initial sketches through to the realistic models and test experiments, including interaction design and research into sustainable materials and business models. Ultimately, this leads to the design specification for both high volume manufactured consumer products or for more individual designer one-off products.
This course teaches you the body of skills, knowledge and experience you’ll need to become a professional designer who can create innovative and lasting products for many kinds of people in many parts of the world.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
All coursework is project-based. The culmination of the final year is an exhibition of work, a variation of which travels to the ’shop window’ of London. To fulfil the requirements of a modern programme of this type and level, an investment in appropriate equipment is necessary, and is supported with practical advice and information.
SELECTION
All first choice applicants are interviewed with their portfolio. The portfolio needs to demonstrate the intellectual, conceptual, visual and creative skills of the applicant.
Equally important is the motivation, desire and passion of the applicant to become a graphic designer or imagemaker. Great importance is placed on traditional skills such as drawing and the keeping of sketchbooks, but not to the exclusion of other appropriate skills, which may be craft, digital or conceptual in nature.
CAREERS
Our course provides you with a wide variety of career options including advertising, packaging, publishing, corporate identity, branding, illustration and animation.
