Honours degree; evidence of experiential learning equivalent to a degree; or 3 years relevant professional experience.

Suitable candidates
The course is aimed at those looking to develop their career potential; those with experience of decision making in ceramics, furniture or jewellery design; and practitioners seeking to maximise their existing knowledge-base. Some applicants have a BA in an appropriate specialist subject. Other applicants come from wider arts-based specialisms.

English language requirements
All classes are conducted in English, so you will be required to have a fluent understanding of the language. If English is not your first language you will be asked to provide evidence of your English language ability. We strongly advise international applicants to take an IELTS test as soon as they consider studying in the UK. Minimum scores for entry on to a postgraduate course are as follows:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.5

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): hand written test: 548-567, computer based test: 211-225

We provide free tuition in English for international students and regular workshops in the language of artand design. We also offer a number of short courses that enable students from overseas to improve their portfolios and English skills before applying to their chosen course.

Jewellery, Silversmithing & Related Products Postgrad Certificate/Postgrad Diploma/MA

The postgraduate course is concerned with the design and development through individual practice in the diverse disciplines of this subject. It is designed to enable you to identify, understand and contribute to the development of existing and new career directions in design, studio production and small-scale manufacture of jewellery, silversmithing and related products and extends beyond the conventional parameters of the subject to share boundaries with industrial design, fashion design, fine art and sculpture.

It is one of very few courses in the subject nationally, is situated in new, purpose-built accommodation and offers a comprehensive range of facilities and equipment.

The School of Jewellery has very good links with industry and commerce and the course benefits from close association with the School’s broad programme of specialist courses leading to qualifications at varying levels, as well as contact with the wide range of postgraduate courses in Birmingham City University Institute of Art and Design (BIAD).

A programme of specialist short courses is run for industry and commerce in which students of the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma course are eligible to participate.
Course Content

A lecture and seminar programme runs throughout the first two stages of the course introducing and developing theoretical and practical studies concerned with the design procress, production methods and professional practice. Your research can relate to a wide range of areas including design history, galleries, commerce and industry.

Design experiences include the generation of iideas by developing studio methodologies, strategies for product development and the analysis of design problems. Reflection on the relationships between personal objectives, cultural values, market identities, manufacturing, prototyping techniques and new technologies will further enhance and contextualise your studio practice.

The course provides an opportunity to extend beyond the conventional parameters of the subject and has affinities with product design, fashion, fine art and sculpture.
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)

You will apply concept origination and development techniques, prototyping facilites, market and other research techniques to facilitate the development of individual design projects.
Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)

You will gain in-depth knowledge of new and unfamiliar technologies and skills, applicable to your own artistic and intellectual research. You will apply project planning techniques and strategic thinking to further develop your individual design strategy, which informs the direction of personal and professional objectives and studio practice.
Master’s (MA)

You will apply accumulated contextual information to the conduct and documentation of a Major Design Study, which addresses the relationship between your skills and objectives, professional planning and career aspiration. You will demonstrate you understanding, knowledge and critical awareness through the systematic development of a substantial body of practical work, supported by a written report, informed by personal research.
Study Commitment (Part-Time)

Attendance is on one day per week plus an equivalent amount of personal study time. The division of the course into three distinct stages - Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Arts - enables students to vary their mode of attendance.
Assessment

The material assessed is the outcome of each module. You will receive regular feedback on your performance throughout the course.
Entry Requirements

Either a first degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent qualifications or experience.

Overseas applicants should have a British Council’s IELTS overall score of 6. Applicants who have satisfactory qualifications from courses providing postgraduate experience in the subject area (e.g. Jewellery, Silversmithing and related courses) are eligible to apply for entry at the appropriate level.

This course develops your creativity by exploring the design of space, form and structure.

You study design, craft, industrial production and the uses and purposes of furniture for public and private environments. You also focus on aesthetics, human factors and the creative opportunities essential to furniture design.

Interior designers develop spaces tailored to the needs of the people who use them. They must consider the user’s emotional and physical needs, and relate them to situations from nightclubs to museums.

MDes Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University

This course teaches you the traditional skills and techniques for designing and making silverware and jewellery, such as hand raising and forging. But it also challenges your thinking about contemporary materials and design.

You graduate with a masters degree at the end of four years’ study. Normally you would have to pay postgraduate course fees when you enrol.

You work with precious and non-precious metals and explore working with mixed media, wood, plastics and paper.

Our workshops are well equipped with

You learn skills such as critical writing and professional practice, and you can study a foreign language.
