Major in Graphic Design at State University of New York

The B.F.A. in Graphic Design offers a concentrated and structured program in the study of contemporary graphic design, including intensive training in graphic design, studio art, art history and museum studies. This major is designed to prepare students not only to become graphic designers, but artists, who illustrate, photograph, sculpt, paint, print, and create computer and digital images. Students devote a majority of their junior year to a range of study in graphic design theory and practices in both print as well as multimedia technologies. During this study, they engage in the preparation of an individual print and electronic portfolio, leaving their senior year open for specialized study in any area of graphic design or studio art.

ORGANIZATION AND CONTENT OF EDUCATION:

A year in core M1 (1st year) and two different routes in M2 (2nd year) corresponding to the two specialties Digital Images and Virtual Reality (Specialty Research) and Arts et technologies de l’image virtuelle (occupational specialty / IUP).
M1 First Year – 600 + hd’enseignement course is 60 ECTS *

LABORATOIRES underlying TRAINING:

Laboratory Digital Imaging and Virtual Reality, (one of the three components of the host team EA 4010 Picture Arts and Contemporary Art) which develops experimental research, theoretical, and algorithmic art in the fields of the digital image and virtual reality: three-dimensional synthesis, animations realistic synthesis of the human body, virtual actors, intelligent and sensitive interaction, artificial life, art installations.

M2: having obtained the master 1, the words Arts et Technologies de l’Image, the master 1 in the arts or technical education or an equivalent degree in the same disciplines.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be able to demonstrate, through the submission and review of a portfolio and through an interview, a level of knowledge and competence appropriate to the demands of the programme, and to demonstrate the potential to benefit from that study. Candidates will normally hold an honours degree (minimum of second class honours) in an appropriate Design subject, and will have evidence of recent work equivalent to honours degree standard.

Applications must include a statement of intent, supported by eight to twelve colour slides or digital images showing evidence of recent work. Suitable candidates will be invited for interview, to which they should bring a portfolio of recent, original work or, in the case of three-dimensional work, photographs.

At interview an applicant’s potential to benefit from the programme of study will be assessed, and the interview will focus on the Design practice of the individual, so that his/her needs in relation to the programme aims can be discussed.

Candidates for the part-time programme will be required to have regular access to an appropriately equipped Design studio or its equivalent.
