UG in Visual Communication Design at Hartford College for Women

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

The Visual Communication Design (VCD) major involves the development of visual language systems for communication. The VCD department emphasizes practice, theory, methodology, and history, which are the foundations of the discipline. Students learn that the visual products of design are a conscious integration of the human factor with technology and aesthetics. The faculty encourages students to become designers who function as interpreters of human communication in a social context. This requires not only specific vocational tasks but also critical thinking and intellectual flexibility. Toward this goal, the program is intended to provide a broad educational background within a professional context.

The visual communication design department is housed in the Harry Jack Gray Center and comprises two teaching classrooms, a conference room/presentation space, two departmental computer labs and a designated senior studio space. The lab is equipped with Apple Macintosh computers, large-format color inkjet and black-and-white laser printers including an EPSON 9500, slide and flat-bed scanners, and lending library of high-end digital still and video cameras. Software used in VCD instruction includes the Adobe CS3 Suite, QuarkXPress, and many others. A GS-15 plotter/cutter, donated by Gerber Scientific Products, is available to all art students to create vinyl type and graphics. Silkscreen printing equipment is also available.

UG in Graphics Design at Binus University Indonesia

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Under the scope of Faculty of Communication and Multimedia, the Visual Communication Design Department at BINUS UNIVERSITY was founded on 1999 and achieved outstanding accreditation from DIKTI (Grade A) in 2004.

Since 2004, there have been seven graduations with the total of 550 students. Our industries and communities have counted our products and the abilities of our alumni. They are not only hearing but also chatting about our graduates. Our teaching staffs have also become part of a bigger family. 70% of them come from the professions; the others have had educational careers. The lecturers bring real working experience to the teaching process, guide the students towards a professional attitude in both design process and presentation, and knowledge of marketing and information technology.

We pleased with our achievement, but we still have long way to go. In the global era, the role of educational institutions is becoming more important as a creative industry problem solver both now and future. It is our challenge to become distinct and qualified. We can keep our heads up, but we have to look down every once in a while if we want to walk the road ahead with confidence.

The history of the Department can be traced back to Department of Art Design, National College of Art and Design Section of Department of Craft at National Taiwan College of Art. Department of Art Design, National College of Art was founded in 1957 and is the earliest professional design department at a college in Taiwan. At the beginning, there were two sections of plane and 3D. Later, the Plane Section was renamed Decoration Section and Applied Fine Art Section.
In 1984, Department of Art Design was divided into two classes, which were renamed Design Section and Craft Section. Ceramics Section was added later. In the past decades, working together with Department of Art Design at the same time, Design Section has developed many outstanding design talents in Taiwan. In 1994, the schools was reorganized as a college and the name of the Department was renamed Department of Craft with still sections of craft and design. In August 2000, Craft Design Department and Visual Communication Design Department were founded. In 2004, under approval of Ministry of Education, we established the graduate institute of the Department and started recruiting students in 2005.
Inheriting the perfect faculty of the original Design Section of Department of Craft, we have now over thirty full/part-time teachers. The space layout is complete with comprehensive and diversified facilities. We are proud to be the key place of design education in Taiwan, as we fully keep up with the progress of the society.

In addition to courses of professional theories, we focus on various kinds of training for basic design, practice of actual works to presentation of creativity to enable students to learn different design concepts and expression methods step by step and establish their capability of professional design.
