Web Design & Interactive Media — Bachelor of Fine Arts
The little icons on your cell phone screen. The menus on a DVD. Your Web browser’s homepage. The e-ticket kiosk at the airport. Even the ATM at your neighborhood supermarket. All of these are examples of Web design and interactive media – the creation of attractive and effective visual ways for people to seek or distribute information and entertainment, to learn or teach, buy or sell, and communicate instantly across the planet, using the ever-expanding world of digital technology. The bachelor’s degree program in Web Design & Interactive Media at The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago offers students the knowledge and skills to prepare for beginning a career in areas including Web design, e-learning design, e-commerce, education, entertainment, corporate communications, and online marketing.
The Web Design & Interactive Media program is designed for students committed to combining creative visual and information design with modern digital technology, and a strong desire to communicate with their clients and end users.
Areas of study include:
Foundation skills in drawing, design, composition, typography, and color theory
Audio and video production
Digital skills development in image creation and manipulation
A wide range of general education courses
E-learning, computer based training, and user-centered design concepts
Web scripting and design, interactive authoring, and information design
Students take advantage of up-to-date computer labs, both Macintosh and PC, and a wide range of industry-accepted software. They also benefit from working closely with dedicated faculty, many of whom have extensive industry experience, offer real-world insights, and help students develop the collaborative skills, maturity, and confidence necessary for professional success.
Students successfully completing this program create a portfolio of original work – essential to seeking employment in the industry – demonstrating their mastery of design, technical, and communications skills.
Graduates from the Web Design & Interactive Media program are prepared for entry-level positions in this rapidly expanding and fascinating field such as Web designer, Web site developer or interactive designer.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
The Illinois Institute of Art–Chicago offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Digital Media Production; Game Art & Design; Media Arts & Animation; Web Design & Interactive Media; and Visual Effects & Motion Graphics that also includes general education courses. The degree program lasts four academic years (12 quarters or 132 weeks in length) and contains 180 quarter-credits, including 64 quarter-credits in general education.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
Instructional methods at The Illinois Institute of Art–Chicago include lecture, demonstrations, tutorials, one-on-one instruction and periodic examinations. Except for internships and field trips, all instruction is conducted in a classroom.

Web Design & Interactive Media — Associate of Applied Science
An innovative field that has unlimited potential, interactive media is evolving into a billion-dollar industry including interactive publishing, Internet content design, advertising, scientific research, product marketing and promotion, entertainment and education. The Web Design & Interactive Media program at The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago prepares students for the field, beginning with a foundation in basic design skills including drawing, perspective, composition and color theory. Coursework continues with techniques of interactive systems development using accepted tools of the industry. Topics including digital imaging, computer graphics and animation, sound and video production are introduced. Students also refine business and professional skills essential to building a rewarding career. General Education courses prepare students for future challenges and successes by providing a base of knowledge in history, cultural, political and social studies.
Graduates have the artistic and technical skills to begin careers in entry-level positions such as production assistant with a multimedia company, corporate communications specialist, video or audio assistant, or freelance web designer. More experienced professionals work in environments as interactive designers, videographers and presentation authors.
Program Description
The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Web Design & Interactive Media that also includes general education courses. The degree program lasts two academic years (6 quarters) and consists of 96 quarter credits, including 24 quarter credits in general education.

The Certificate in Advanced Web Design offers students with prior web design experience an opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills. Students will learn advanced software concepts from a design perspective. Courses in advanced web authoring and animation and advanced web design concepts are included in the curriculum.

Certificate students fully participate in classes, often with Degree students, and are held to the same high standards.
Certificates in Design prepare students to enter one of several expanding technology-based fields, or advance their current design careers. Fine Arts Certificate students access the Corcoran’s well-equipped studios, extensive offerings, and outstanding faculty. Electives are chosen in consultation with an advisor who can also approve substitutions for required courses, based on students’ prior studies or experience.
Each certificate program is either 15.0 or 18.0 credits in length. With the exception of some Botanical Art and Illustration courses, each course carries 1.5 or 3.0 credits. For a certificate to be issued, the requirements must be completed within a three-year period with a grade of C or better in each course. Students must ensure that the Office of the Registrar receives notification of their completion of high school or the equivalent before submitting their certificate request form.

The Certificate in Printmaking allows students to work with the Corcoran’s renowned faculty of printmakers while studying traditional printmaking techniques. Students also incorporate advances in digital technologies into the curriculum. Courses allow students to work in a variety of concentrations, including etching, lithography, mixed media, papermaking and screen-printing, or digital media design.

The Certificate in Interior Design will program provides the students with a strong foundation in the general principles of Interior interior Designdesign. The curriculum includes both academic and studio classes. History and theory classes include academic study in the areas of art history, architecture, interior design, and decorative arts. In addition, participants learn the fundamentals of color theory, space planning, building code and access issues, as well as beginning technical drawing skills. through the Introduction to Interior Design class.
