educational goals and professional characteristics

The graduate programme in visual and multimedia design prepares students for careers in graphic and visual design and communications. Students attend theory courses and receive practical training in tune with current multimedia practices. Graduates will be qualified to work in all areas of communications, ranging form paper to screen, analogue to digital. The course covers a tradition which spans from the ancient origins of visual forms of presentation of images and words, to the beginning of printing in the mid-15th century, and finally to the arrival of the Internet in the 21st century.

The programme combines various disciplinary approaches related to a broad range of visual communications and intensive design workshops. Students enter the workplace with a broad, yet specialised background, or may continue their studies at PhD level.

In addition to seminars and courses in theory, history and criticism, as well as profession-related project workshops that the programme offers, students can also attend courses and workshops of the other graduate programmes at the Faculty of Arts and Design.

The programme has two main areas of research and eduction:

1. Communication Design (e.g., graphic design, identity design, computer and communication design)

2. Interaction Design (Communication design [man-object], systems and services design, new technology design [computers and telecommunications] )

In order to avoid limiting the studies to specific professional fields, the programme places emphasis on the idea of future communication and interaction designers being “design directors”. Designers who have a combination of practical and specialised design skills, strategic know-how, abilities in complex problem solving, communication campaign planning, and developing and coordinating large projects, and who are capable of creating a series of communication events and managing their development and realization.
Programme organisation
courses

Students participate in 3 workshops per year and also attend theory lectures and seminars. In the workshops students are guided by renowned professionals and lecturers in the design field and gain hands-on experience. Cooperation among the other degree programmes offered by the faculty of arts and design allows for the offering of a broad range of theory courses taught by important lecturers. An important part of the programme is the choice of the student in individualizing their specific study programme according to their interests and professional ambitions. The structure of the programme allows students to focus on both traditional editorial aspects and multimedia/multimode aspects of graphics, as well as on interface design with the use of computer technology.
summary of academic programme

The 2-year graduate programme is composed of six didactic periods (three per academic year). Students acquire 120 university credits (CFU) in the form of workshops, classes in theory and criticism, elective courses, mandatory internships, and thesis development, until the completion of the academic programme established for that degree programme at the time of enrolment. tutoring

All faculty teaching staff are required to give tutoring services in their relative field of teaching upon request. Internship tutoring services are offered for help during the internship and for development of internship-related theses (conducted by the didactic tutor supervisor).

Graduate programmes also provide tutoring services for helping students with their final papers, which are provided by PhD students from the University Iuav. Tutors monitor students’ projects and help in defining methods for final papers/projects.
admission to the graduate programme in visual and multimedia design

The programme admits 50 candidates, plus 15 non-EU member candidates.

Candidates in possession of a first level (undergraduate) university degree, including degrees from Fine Arts Academies, or a previous Italian 4 or 5-year university degree, and who pass the admissions requirements, are allowed to enrol in the degree programme.

Students holding a degree in Industrial Design from the University IUAV of Venice may gain direct access to the programme if they meet all requirements, are admitted to the admissions list, and with respect to the number of open places in the degree programme.
Admissions selection

Admission to the programme is made by a pre-enrolment procedure, explained in detail on the IUAV web page http://www.iuav.it.

Admission selection is made by the Admissions Committee for the Graduate Programme in Visual and Multimedia Design. The following documents need to be presented to the Admissions Committee: a curriculum vitae (in the format proposed by the degree programme), a degree certificate including all exams held, a Personal Portfolio - in paper form only - which illustrates the candidates experiences accumulated during their university studies and any other activities related to the field of discipline.

If group projects are presented, it is necessary that candidates include a written description of their individual role and work in each project.

Prerequisites

There are no exams required for admission; however, some courses do have prerequisites. Students should consult the individual course descriptions (posted for each teacher on the faculty web site) to check on prerequisites.
Attendance

Attendance of courses and workshops is mandatory for at least two-thirds of all lessons. Daily attendance must be registered in the Register for each course.

Students are required to attend one workshop per didactic period. Students may attend courses for first-level degrees only with proper authorisation from the programme director and if credits are applicable.
