Graphic Design at West Virginia State University

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The purpose of the Department of Art is to provide the student with undergraduate competencies in the theoretical and applied forms and processes of visual art.

Catering to both fine arts majors and art education majors, the Department of Art emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, problem solving, and the
development of self motivation. Studio courses enable students to develop technical skills and aesthetic judgment in the fine and commercial arts.

Art history courses provide students with socio-historical knowledge and understanding of the art of the past, of Non-Western art, as well as contemporary critical art forms and issues.

Art and Design in B.F.A. at Grand Valley State University

Friday, February 20th, 2009

In the GVSU General Education requirements, the Foundation section lists ART 101 Introduction to Art as a choice. ART 101 is not required for BFA, BA, or BS in Art and Design. Some of the material in ART 101 will be duplicated in the required studio and art history courses. Therefore, to broaden their experience, art majors are advised to take one of the other classes in the General Education Arts category.

B.F.A. Degree

The B.F.A. degree is designed for students interested in a professional degree in art or design. It will prepare students for a career as a professional artist or designer. Entry requirements:
After completing the Foundation program (ART 150, 151, 152, 153, 155, and 157), students are evaluated for entrance into the design and fine arts programs.
A 2.75 GPA must be maintained in the upper level courses for a BFA.
Foundation and Junior Reviews.
Upon completion of the Foundation program (ART 150, 151, 152, 153, 155, and 157), all art students are required to submit their collective work for faculty review.
Two semesters before their B.F.A. exhibition, all B.F.A. students are required to submit a sample of their work since Foundations for faculty review and comment.
Based on the review, students may be asked to do remedial work and submit to a second review. If a second review is unsuccessful, the student will be asked to leave his or her current program or the department.
See the B.F.A. Handbook for scheduling details and specific requirements.
Graduating seniors must have a B.F.A. show and a final acceptance of their work by the art and design faculty, earning a grade of at least a C. The fine arts and illustration seniors will have a group exhibition. The graphic design seniors will conduct a boardroom presentation to the art and design faculty, culminating in an exhibition of their work. See the B.F.A. Handbook for details.

BFA in Design

The bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in design is a limited access, one hundred-eighteen (118) semester-hour program. Upon completion of the nineteen (19) semester hours in the foundations program, (3) semester hours of GRA 2190C and (3) semester hours of ART 4926C, applications for the BFA in Design program are accepted in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Acceptance is based on portfolio review by the faculty.

Students admitted to the BFA program are exempt from the language requirement, but they are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in art and art history courses and to fulfill the additional requirements and responsibilities of this program, culminating in the advancement review and graduation show. The BFA adviser can provide additional guidance with regard to entrance and degree requirements.
