Aims of the course
The Foundation Year is the first year of a four-year extended programme of Undergraduate studies in the Department. It offers the opportunity to enter University twelve months earlier than by the customary route. The course provides students the chance to engage, explore and experiment with a diverse range of Art, Media and Design subjects. Students build up a portfolio of skills and experience sufficient to progress to JCAMD Undergraduate degree courses that are most appropriate to their needs and aspirations.

Description

This program has been designed to help students develop skills in their chosen discipline, which include Photography, Animation and Interactive Media or Music Industry. Students will produce a self-directed project designed to prepare them for entry into their chosen industry or further postgraduate study. Graduates from this program will be reflective, professional and responsive practitioners with an ability to apply critical analysis and creative solutions in different contexts within their chosen area.

Gaining credit for previous study or experience
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer are ways that RMIT recognises applicants’ skills and knowledge gained through formal and informal education and training, work experience, and/or life experience (including volunteer work; committee responsibilities; family duties, hobbies).

Entrance Requirements

To be considered for entrance into this program, you must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in the discipline of Photography, Games, Animation, Film, Interactive Media or Music Industry. To be eligible to undertake this program, it is expected that you would have achieved a minimum grade of a credit average (or equivalent), in an undergraduate degree at RMIT or other tertiary institution in Australia or overseas. However, in individual cases, experience in the relevant sector since graduation may be taken into consideration.

Timely applications for postgraduate coursework programs are due by:

Fees

CSP fees apply. Full-fee places may also be available.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)

A CSP is jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government and the student. The amount to be paid by the student is defined by discipline ‘bands’. In 2009, the following student contribution rates for a standard, annual, full-time load apply (prices listed are maximum student contribution amounts):

National Priority: maximum amount is $4,162—education, nursing, science, mathematics and statistics.

Band 1: maximum amount is $5,201—humanities, behavioural sciences, social studies, clinical psychology, foreign languages, visual and performing arts.

Band 2: maximum amount is $7,412—built environment, computing, health, engineering, surveying and agriculture.

Band 3: maximum amount is $8,677—accounting, administration, economics, commerce, law, dentistry, medicine and veterinary science.

Students who undertake more or less than a full-time study load, or who study courses from a combination of the above categories, will be charged the proportionate student contribution.

Course structure
You will take 4 core modules in the first semester. In the second semester you will take two core modules and select two further modules from a menu.

Sound and Vision
Critical Practice 1

Spring
Notebook
Critical Practice 2

And two from:
Film & Video
Fine Art
Design
Music Technology
Material Science

Level 1, 2 and 3 Modules will be taken from the Undergraduate degree selected at the end of the Foundation Year.

Assessment

You are assessed via a combination of coursework, presentation, practical work, seminar performance, group work, critical report and a reflective journal.
